Each note shapes North Carolina’s rich and vibrant musical history. Doc Watson, John Coltrane, James Taylor, Thelonious Monk, Randy Travis and The Avett Brothers are among legendary North Carolina music alumni. Traditional music – from bluegrass to century-old ballads – still resounds along the Blue Ridge Music Trails. Talent old and new is always on display at concerts, festivals and small venues throughout the state where you can hear our heritage first hand.
Today you can retrace Blackbeard’s footsteps all along our coast and also browse treasures from his sunken ship Queen Anne’s Revenge at the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort. But Blackbeard wasn’t the only pirate drawn to our shores. “Calico” Jack Rackham, Charles Vane and Stede Bonnet are other famous characters in our pirate history.
A State that takes its BBQ and beer very seriously. Whether it’s April or October; the state is one of the best for craft brewing with unique and exceptional flavours that draw on the rich agricultural heritage. Craft breweries flourish across North Carolina and have tripled since 2010. The number of breweries currently standing at more than 180 one of the highest counts per State in the USA.
Barbecue is an important part of the heritage and history of the U.S. state of North Carolina. It has resulted in a series of bills and laws that relate to the subject, and at times has been a politically charged subject. In part, this is due to the existence of two distinct types of barbecue that have developed over the last few hundred years.
